Evaluation of Clinical Decision Support, with fall prevention as a case study (XtraTrack Season 2026)

Clinical decision support systems are one of the most important tools to improve health care processes and the quality of care. However, improvement is not a foregone conclusion. Evaluation of such systems is both critically important and challenging. The recent surge of interest in AI brings both increasing pressure toward quick adoption and an increasing need for adequate and ongoing evaluation. I will discuss some examples of evaluating systems that support care of patients at high risk of falls. SNOWDROP provided support in the general practice setting, with a focus on supporting shared decision-making. ADFICE_IT provides support in the hospital outpatient setting, with the aim of reducing risk of injurious falls. We will cover what can be evaluated, what should be evaluated, challenges, and some possible solutions.

Stephanie Medlock is an assistant professor in Clinical Decision Support Systems at the AmsterdamUMC, University of Amsterdam. Her interest in clinical decision support was sparked by her clinical experiences as a veterinarian, which led to a research focus on systems that help doctors improve care for their patients. She is the co-chair of the EFMI Evaluation Working Group. She is also a Principal Educator, and recent work has included publications on the use of an open-source electronic health record in medical and medical informatics education.
